• We’re delighted to celebrate Christmas with you! Relax, enjoy the four different guest artists in the first set and stick around to sing some wonderful traditional carols. This concert is hosted by Scots Church Sydney, and curated by Lo! Behold! Projects.

  • At this time of year we often think of the meaningful connections we enjoy. For some it’s a moment to catch up with loved ones or old friends, perhaps even distant family. For others it’s a bitter-sweet reminder of loved-ones missed.

    Christmas reminds us of our great need for real and loving relationships and connections, and in fact, points us to the most important relational connection of all: Jesus.

    Immanuel means God with us. Life and hope has come in the person, Jesus. We need both personally and in the world. We are invited into true life, found in relationship with Jesus. He calls us into his family.

    He is also called the Messiah - a Saviour and King. It’s hard to imagine a good and perfect ruler, who sits above all authority and knows and cares for our every need. But this is the wild claim, ‘He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger’.

    You might like to take a moment to reflect on who this Jesus of Christmas is, from the words of John 1:9-14 (NIV):

    “The true light that gives light to everyone was coming into the world. He was in the world, and though the world was made through him, the world did not recognize him.

    He came to that which was his own, but his own did not receive him. Yet to all who did receive him, to those who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God— children born not of natural descent, nor of human decision or a husband’s will, but born of God.

    The Word became flesh and made his dwelling among us. We have seen his glory, the glory of the one and only Son, who came from the Father, full of grace and truth.”

  • 1. Away in a manger, no crib for a bed,

    The little Lord Jesus laid down His sweet head.

    The stars in the bright sky looked down where He lay,

    The little Lord Jesus, asleep on the hay.

    2. The cattle are lowing, the Baby awakes,

    But little Lord Jesus, no crying He makes;

    I love Thee, Lord Jesus, look down from the sky

    And stay by my cradle til morning is nigh.

    3. Be near me, Lord Jesus, I ask Thee to stay

    Close by me forever, and love me, I pray;

    Bless all the dear children in Thy tender care,

    And fit us for heaven to live with Thee there.

    Verses 1 and 2, anonymous. Verse 3 by John Thomas McFarland

  • 1.The first Noel the angel did say

    Was to certain poor shepherds in fields as they lay;

    In fields where they lay keeping their sheep,

    On a cold winter's night that was so deep.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

Born is the King of Israel.

    2. They lookèd up and saw a star

    Shining in the east, beyond them far;

    And to the earth it gave great light,

    And so it continued both day and night.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

    Born is the King of Israel.

    3. And by the light of that same star

    Three Wise Men came from country far;

    To seek for a King was their intent,

    And to follow the star wherever it went.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

    Born is the King of Israel.

    4. This star drew nigh to the northwest,

    Over Bethlehem it took its rest;

    And there it did both stop and stay,

    Right over the place where Jesus lay.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

    Born is the King of Israel.

    6. Then entered in those Wise Men three,

    Full reverently upon the knee,

    And offered there, in His presence,

    Their gold and myrrh and frankincense.

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

    Born is the King of Israel

    Noel, Noel, Noel, Noel,

    Born is the King of Israel.

  • 1.God rest ye merry gentlemen

    Let nothing you dismay

    Remember, Christ, our Saviour

    Was born on Christmas day

    To save us all from Satan's power

    When we were gone astray

    O tidings of comfort and joy

    Comfort and joy

    O tidings of comfort and joy

    2.In Bethlehem, in Israel

    This blessed Babe was born

    And laid within a manger

    Upon this blessed morn

    The which His Mother Mary

    Did nothing take in scorn

    O tidings of comfort and joy

    Comfort and joy

    O tidings of comfort and joy

    3.From God our Heavenly Father

    A blessed Angel came

    And unto certain Shepherds

    Brought tidings of the same

    How that in Bethlehem was born

    The Son of God by Name

    O tidings of comfort and joy

    Comfort and joy

    O tidings of comfort and joy

  •    1. Hark! The herald angels sing,

          "Glory to the newborn King;

          Peace on earth, and mercy mild,

          God and sinners reconciled!"

          Joyful, all ye nations rise,

          Join the triumph of the skies;

          Hark! The herald angels sing,

          "Glory to the newborn King!"

       2. Christ, by highest heav'n adored;

          Christ the everlasting Lord;

          Late in time, behold Him come,

          Offspring of a virgin's womb.

          Veiled in flesh the Godhead see;

          Hail th'incarnate Deity,

          Pleased as man with men to dwell,

          Jesus our Emmanuel.

          Hark! The herald angels sing,

          "Glory to the newborn King!"

       3. Hail the heav'nly Prince of Peace!

          Hail the Sun of Righteousness!

          Light and life to all He brings,

          Ris'n with healing in His wings.

          Mild He lays His glory by,

          Born that man no more may die.

          Born to give them second birth.

          Hark! The herald angels sing,

          "Glory to the newborn King!"

  • 1. Joy to the world, the Lord is come!

          Let earth receive her King;

          Let every heart prepare Him room,

          And heaven and nature sing,

          While fields and floods, rocks, hills and plains

          Repeat the sounding joy,

          Repeat the sounding joy,

          Repeat, repeat, the sounding joy.

    3. No more let sin and sorrows grow

    Not thorns infest the ground

    He comes to make his blessings known

    Far as the curse is found

    Far as the curse is found

    Far as, far as the curse is found.

       4. He rules the world with truth and grace,

          And makes the nations prove

          The glories of His righteousness,

          And wonders of His love,

          And wonders of His love,

          And wonders, wonders, of His love.

  • 1. Oh holy night! The stars are brightly shining,

    It is the night of our dear Saviour's birth.

    Long lay the world in sin and error pining,

    'Til He appear'd and the soul felt its worth.

    A thrill of hope, the weary world rejoices,

    For yonder breaks a new and glorious morn.

    Fall on your knees! Oh, hear the angel voices!

    Oh night divine, the night when Christ was born;

    Oh night, divine, Oh night, Oh night Divine.

    2. Led by the light of Faith serenely beaming,

    With glowing hearts by His cradle we stand.

    So led by light of a star sweetly gleaming,

    Here come the wise men from Orient land.

    The King of Kings lay thus in lowly manger;

    In all our trials born to be our friend.

    He knows our need, to our weakness is no stranger,

    Behold your King! Before Him lowly bend!

    Behold your King, Before Him lowly bend!

    3. Truly He taught us to love one another;

    His law is love and His gospel is peace.

    Chains shall He break for the slave is our brother;

    And in His name all oppression shall cease.

    Sweet hymns of joy in grateful chorus raise we,

    Let all within us praise His holy name.

    Christ is the Lord! O praise His Name forever,

    His power and glory evermore proclaim.

    His power and glory evermore proclaim.

    Oh night, divine, oh night, oh night divine.

    Music by Adolphe Adam, words by Placide Cappeau.

  • 1.O little town of Bethlehem,

    How still we see thee lie!

    Above thy deep and dreamless sleep

    The silent stars go by.

    Yet in thy dark streets shineth

    The everlasting Light;

    The hopes and fears of all the years

    Are met in thee tonight.

    2.For Christ is born of Mary,

    And gathered all above,

    While mortals sleep, the angels keep

    Their watch of wondering love.

    O morning stars together,

    Proclaim the holy birth,

    And praises sing to God the King,

    And peace to men on earth!

    3.How silently, how silently,

    The wondrous Gift is giv’n;

    So God imparts to human hearts

    The blessings of His Heav’n.

    No ear may hear His coming,

    But in this world of sin,

    Where meek souls will receive Him still,

    The dear Christ enters in.

    4. O holy Child of Bethlehem,

    Descend to us, we pray;

    Cast out our sin, and enter in,

    Be born in us today.

    We hear the Christmas angels

    The great glad tidings tell;

    O come to us, abide with us,

    Our Lord Emmanuel!

  • 1.Once in royal David’s city,

    Stood a lowly cattle shed,

    Where a mother laid her baby,

    In a manger for his bed,

    Mary was that mother mild,

    Jesus Christ her little child.

    2.He came down to earth from heaven,

    Who is God and Lord of all,

    And his shelter was a stable,

    And his cradle was a stall;

    With the poor, and mean, and lowly,

    Lived on earth our Saviour holy.

    3.And our eyes at last shall see him,

    Through his own redeeming love;

    for that child so dear and gentle,

    Is our Lord in heaven above,

    And he leads his children on,

    To the place where he is gone.

    Words by Cecil Frances Alexander, music by Henry J. Gauntlett.

  •    1. Silent night, holy night,

          All is calm, all is bright

          Round yon virgin mother and Child.

          Holy Infant, so tender and mild,

          Sleep in heavenly peace,

          Sleep in heavenly peace.

       2. Silent night, holy night,

          Shepherds quake at the sight;

          Glories stream from heaven afar,

          Heavenly hosts sing Alleluia!

          Christ the Saviour is born,

          Christ the Saviour is born!

       3. Silent night, holy night,

          Son of God, love's pure light;

          Radiant beams from Thy holy face

          With the dawn of redeeming grace,

          Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth,

          Jesus, Lord, at Thy birth.

    Words by Josef Mohr, c1817.

  • 1.We three kings of Orient are;

    Bearing gifts we traverse afar,

    Field and fountain, moor and mountain,

    Following yonder star.

    Star with royal beauty bright,

    Westward leading, still proceeding,

    Guide us to thy perfect light.

    Gold I bring to crown Him again,

    King forever, ceasing never,

    O star of wonder, star of light,

    Star with royal beauty bright,

    Westward leading, still proceeding,

    Incense owns a Deity nigh;

    Prayer and praising, voices raising,

    Worship Him God on high.

    Refrain:

    O star of wonder, star of light,

    Star with royal beauty bright,

    Westward leading, still proceeding,

    Guide us to thy perfect light.

    4.Myrrh is mine, its bitter perfume

    Breathes a life of gathering gloom;

    Sorrowing, sighing, bleeding, dying,

    Sealed in the stone cold tomb.

    Refrain:

    O star of wonder, star of light,

    Star with royal beauty bright,

    Westward leading, still proceeding,

    Guide us to thy perfect light.

    5.Glorious now behold Him arise;

    King and God and sacrifice;

    Alleluia, Alleluia,

    Sounds through the earth and skies.

    Refrain:

    O star of wonder, star of light,

    Star with royal beauty bright,

    Westward leading, still proceeding,

    Guide us to thy perfect light.

    All meanly wrapped in swathing bands

    Of angels praising God on high

    Good will henceforth from heaven to men

    Begin and never cease.
